Miss Wes' Guide to Hillcrest's Gay Bars
Coming to San Diego, looking for a gay bar? Here's a quick overview:
- Pecs "A man's bar" — Mix of bear bar/blue collar bar. Strong drinks, strong odor.
- Bourbon Street — Casual bar. Lesbians in the early evening, guys later in the evening
- Club Universal — The tony hangout with straight and gay mixed
- Flick's — The stand and pose bar next to Rich's
- Rich's — Once the dance club to be on Friday nights. I haven't been there in a while, so I don't know how popular it still is. Steer clear of the inch of "water" on the bathroom floor.
- Numbers — Dance club. Lesbian night on Fridays. Gay thug night on Saturdays.
- The Flame — Dance club. Boys night on Fridays. Lesbian night on Saturday.
- Urban Mo's — Used to be Hamburger Marys. Drinking and smoking on the patio, country line dancing inside on the dance floor.
- Bacchus House — Papi chulo night on Fridays. Northpark Tilly gives it the stamp of approval for Latin strippers on Friday night, but a thumbs down to the patrons.
- Eagle — Leather bar. You could get flogged if it's flogging night.
- Martinis Above Fourth — Miss Wes' favorite place. Restaurant and ample lounge area. Piano player/singer on Friday nights.
- Number 1 on Fifth — Interesting mix of young and old. Large patio, but usually smoky. Home of the smelliest restrooms in all of Hillcrest.
- The Caliph — If you're looking for a sugar pappi, you've come to the right old-man bar.
- The Loft — Definitely not the A-list, but it is the spot to "LET THE GOOD TIMES ROLL." If you don't believe me, just look for the sign that says so on the wall near the pool table.
